Deficiency #1

Rule/Regulation Violated:
H. If medication is stored by a resident in the resident's bedroom or residential unit, a manager shall ensure that:
1. The medication is stored according to the resident's service plan; or
Evidence/Findings:
Based on observation, record review, and interview, the manager failed to ensure if medication was stored by a resident in the resident's residential unit, the medication was stored according to the resident's service plan, for one of one resident who stored medication in the resident's residential unit. The deficient practice posed a health and safety risk if the medications were accessible to other residents.

Findings include:

1. During an environmental inspection of the facility, the Compliance Officer observed the door leading into the residential unit of R3 was unlocked. Inside the residential unit of R3, the Compliane Officer observed a medication cabinet in the bathroom. The cabinet contained "L-Tryptohan", "Advil PM", and "Aleve PM". The Compliance Officer also observed "Systane eye drops", "Dorzolamide & Timold eye drops", and "Brimonidine Turtrate Ophthalmic Solution" located unsecured on the bathroom counter.

2.A review of R3's medical record revealed a service plan. The service plan stated "Stores medication in room in a locked container..."

3. In an interview, E3 reported R3 had documentation of doctor authorization to store medications in R3's residential unit. However, E3 acknowledged R3 did not follow the service plan directions of storing medications in a locked container.
